The three concerts featured here show Kirk on top form, backed by great trios. Kirk was an immensely creative artist; perhaps no improvising saxophonist has ever possessed a more comprehensive technique — one that covered every aspect of jazz, from Dixieland to free — and perhaps no other jazz musician has ever been more spontaneously inventive. His skills in constructing a solo are of particular note. Prodigiously talented jazz multi-instrumentalist, renowned for his ability to play several horns simultaneously. Rahsaan Roland Kirk in 1972 (photo: Heinrich Klaffs) “Manzello & Stritch” sounds like the title of a ’70s cop show, but in the hands of Rahsaan Roland Kirk, these unusual variations on the saxophone were vehicles in an arresting display of musical innovation. Born August 7, 1935 in Columbus, Ohio, USA. Died December 5, 1977 in Bloomington, Indiana, USA (of a stroke). He was best known for being a blind jazz saxophonist who could play more than one wind instrument at once.
That year he made his second album, Introducing Roland Kirk, which featured saxophonist/trumpeter Ira Sullivan. In 1961, Kirk toured Germany and spent three months with Charles Mingus. From that point onward, Kirk mostly led his own group, the Vibration Society, recording prolifically with a range of sidemen. Was there ever a more singular figure in jazz than Rahsaan Roland Kirk? Standing on stage, multiple saxophones hanging off him, all being blown and played at the same time, plus assorted bells, whistles and nose flutes, in a well-slick suit, and always wearing shades (Kirk was blind from the age of two, he argued due to medical negligence), witnessing Kirk live must have been quite a spectacle.
These albums feature the artist as either lead or as a strong collaborator with major jazz artists. "Triple Threat", released in 1956 was Roland Kirk's debut project. It featured seven tracks of which four were composed by Mr Rahsaan Roland Kirk Tribute.
Jazz musicians are rarely called shamanistic but the description fits Rahsaan Roland Kirk precisely. Clad in black leather trousers and heavy duty shades (he was blind from the age of two), a truckload of strange looking horns strung round his neck—two or three of which he often played simultaneously—twisting, shaking and otherwise contorting his body, stamping his feet, exhorting audience
Tocaba el saxofón tenor, la flauta y otros instrumentos de viento. Kirk was born Ronald Theodore Kirk in Columbus, Ohio, but felt compelled by a dream to transpose two letters in his first name to make Roland. In 1970, Kirk added “Rahsaan” to his name. Preferring to lead his own groups, Kirk rarely performed as a sideman, though he did record with arranger Quincy Jones, Roy Haynes and had especially notable stints with Charles Mingus.
When avant-garde pioneer Rahsaan Roland Kirk made his Newport Jazz Festival debut in 1962 he was billed as "Discovery of the Year." Six years later, Kirk returned to Newport for his second appearance, then got the call once again from Newport impresario George Wein the following year. Listen to Let's Talk About Jazz on Spotify.

Rahsaan Roland Kirk is hardly a name that comes to mind when I think of some of the more ‘accessible’ jazz music. Though not exactly an avant-garde character per se, Kirk was known for his highly idiosyncratic sax playing, among which included his party trick of playing up to three horns at once.
